Stuttgart Media University (HdM), as we know it today, was created on 1 September 2001 from the merger of two renowned institutions: the Hochschule für Bibliotheks- und Informationswesen (HBI) and the Hochschule für Druck und Medien (HDM). This merger laid the foundation for a unique educational institution that combines the best of both worlds. The roots in information science: The HBI The history of the HBI began back in 1942 as a training centre for public libraries in southern Germany. Over the years, it continuously expanded its range of subjects and tasks and developed into Germany's leading training centre for library and information professionals. The experts who made knowledge accessible and shaped the information landscape were trained here.

The trailblazer for print and media: the HDM The roots of the HDM go back to 1853, when training in the field of print and media began. In 1903, the Fachschule für Buchdruckgewerbe and the Städtische Gewerbeschule jointly trained specialists in letterpress printing. Fifty years later, with the founding of the Higher Technical College for the Graphic Arts, it was even possible to study printing technology in full. A decisive step was taken in 1972 with the founding of the University of Applied Sciences for Printing. Just seven years later, in 1979, it began training the first media technology engineers, which set the course for the continuous expansion of its range of courses and its development into a modern media university.

This rich history of both predecessor universities forms the foundation for today's HdM, which has been continuously shaping the media landscape since 2001 and preparing its students for the challenges and opportunities of a dynamic industry.
